An antique diamond engagement ring is genuinely unique - no two are identical. The diamonds in antique rings were cut by hand before modern mechanical cutting existed, giving them a different character from modern brilliant cuts: warmer, with larger, more distinct flashes of light. Each ring comes with genuine history. Many couples also value the ethical dimension: antique diamonds require no new mining. Victoria has spent over 30 years building stock she believes represents real quality and character.

We stock diamond engagement rings across all periods - Victorian, Edwardian, Art Deco, and mid-century vintage - with particular depth in the Art Deco and Edwardian periods where our selection is especially strong. We also have a dedicated Art Deco Engagement Rings collection for those specifically focused on that period.

Old mine cut (Georgian and Victorian), old European cut (Victorian and Edwardian), and transitional cut (early Art Deco) are the three main antique diamond cuts. All three differ from the modern round brilliant in their proportions and the character of their light return - deeper, warmer, more romantic in appearance. Modern brilliant cuts do not appear in genuinely period pieces and are a sign that a ring has been altered or is a later reproduction.

Every ring purchased from Friar House is supplied with a full insurance valuation certificate prepared by Victoria. We do not generally supply GIA or other laboratory diamond certificates for antique stones, as the modern grading system is designed for modern brilliant-cut diamonds and its application to old cuts is limited. For rings containing very significant diamonds where independent certification is important, we can discuss options.

Aquamarine makes a beautiful and increasingly popular engagement ring choice. Its cool, serene colour carries associations of clarity and calm. It is hard enough for regular wear with reasonable care.
