Antique Gentlemen's Rings

For thousands of years, men of influence have been donning a wearable form of identification and communication known as signet rings.  Signet Rings were engraved with a family seal which was used as a signature when pressed in wax.  More recently, specifically in the 'golden age' of gentleman's jewellery from the late 1930's - 1940's rings became more decorative, including gemstones to show a gentleman's wealth or standing.

Antique rings for men

Men's rings have a longer continuous history than most jewellery categories, with antique signet rings in particular tracing back to their use for sealing documents and identifying status through engraved crests or initials. Antique gentlemen's rings fall into a few main categories: signet rings, often bearing family crests, monograms or blank shields ready for engraving; men's gold rings, sometimes set with a single stone; and, from the Art Deco period onward, bolder men's rings incorporating geometric patterns and onyx or diamond detailing.

Signet rings within our gentlemen's rings collection are typically worn on the little finger, traditionally the left in the UK, and were cast or hand-carved with the crest reversed so it would print correctly when used as a seal - a detail that can help confirm a men's signet ring's genuine antique origin.

Styles in our gentlemen's ring collection

We carry antique signet rings, men's gold bands and Art Deco men's rings, in a range of golds and, less commonly, platinum. Our antique gentlemen's rings collection includes plain signet rings ready for engraving, crested signet rings with existing family or heraldic designs, and bolder Art Deco men's rings with geometric detailing.

Sizing on men's rings tends to run larger than women's rings, and our gentlemen's rings collection is chosen with this in mind. We can advise on resizing where the shank of a particular men's ring allows for it, and help you choose between a signet ring, a gold band or an Art Deco design depending on how it will be worn.

Buying a gentleman's ring: what to look for

If you are buying a signet ring as a gift, ask us about engraving - many of our blank signets can be engraved with a new crest, monogram or initials before you take the men's ring home, giving a genuinely antique piece a personal touch. We can also advise on which of our gentlemen's rings suit daily wear best.

Every ring in our men's rings collection is checked for hallmark accuracy, metal purity and setting security before sale, whether it is a plain gold signet ring or a more elaborate Art Deco men's ring set with diamonds or onyx.
